Aerobiology Core


The Aerobiology Core facilitates aerosol exposures of animal models to BSL-3 pathogens. The University of Pittsburgh RBL has a dedicated U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases(USAMRIID)-trained aerobiologist as well as a dedicated staff for conducting aerosol exposures.

The University of Pittsburgh RBL has a dedicated U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases (USAMRIID)-trained aerobiologist as well as a dedicated staff for conducting aerosol exposures. The aerobiology suite has a class III biosafety cabinet (glove box) and uses a mobile transfer cart system for transportation of animals to and from the aerobiology suite. Aerosol exposures are generated using a Collison 3-jet nebulizer controlled by the AeroMP automated aerosol control system from Biaera Technologies.


Clinical Imaging Core


The Clinical Imaging Core features a state-of-the-art custom-designed Siemens Focus 220 microPET coupled with a NeuroLogica CereTom portable CT scanner. This system provides co-resolution of digital images and can accommodate animal species ranging from rodents to nonhuman primates. The University of Pittsburgh RBL has dedicated staff from the Department of Radiology on site for expert images and interpretation. Portable digital X-ray capabilities also are available.

Live Cell Microscopy Core


The Live Cell Microscopy Core is a satellite to the Center for Biologic Imaging. It features a state-of-the-art Nikon LiveScan Swept Field Confocal microscope. This swept field technology overcomes many limitations of traditional confocal systems as it has selectable aperture sizes, several objective lens magnifications and numerical apertures that can all be used for maximum resolution. In addition, users can control the acquisition time and laser exposure using the software provided. Users may undergo training to use the confocal microscope independently, or they can choose to have their samples analyzed by a dedicated, microscopy technician.
